Everything old is new again if you wait long enough, they say. And that’s the case with landline phones. When smart phones became something that everyone had landline phones really started to fade away. But now it seems that landline phones are starting to make a comeback. When people were staying at home during the pandemic some people started to see the value of having one phone household phone again. Does that mean that seniors who gave up their landlines should get one again? Maybe.
Seniors who have smart phones, security cameras, elder care, and visits from friends and neighbors may think that they don’t need a landline to stay in touch with the people they care about. Many seniors got rid of their landlines because they were getting a lot of scam calls on their landline. And even with an elder care provider answering the phone for them they didn’t want the hassle. But now is a great time to remember some of the benefits of landlines for seniors like:
Landlines Work Without Electricity
Extreme weather is becoming more common in most of the country. When a storm knocks out power or there is a power outage a landline will still work. Landline phones work in any weather so seniors or the elder care providers taking care of them will be able to summon emergency services, call a senior’s family members, or call their doctor if necessary even if there is no electricity. The more extreme the weather becomes the more important it is for seniors to have that ability to call for help if necessary.
Landlines Don’t Need To Be Charged
Cell phone are great, but they do need to charged. If a senior’s cell phone goes dead and they don’t have a charger, or if the electricity is out and they can’t charge their phone it could leave them in a very vulnerable position. If your senior parent has a landline they will always be reachable and they will always be able to call for help without worrying about how much battery the phone has.
Landlines Are Easy For Seniors To Use
Landlines are easy for seniors to use. They are familiar, and most seniors have strong muscle memory when it comes to dialing a landline phone. Push button phones are also usually easy for seniors to use even if they have arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult for them to use their hands. As seniors get older they may struggle to keep up with all the technology on a smart phone but they will easily be able to use a landline.
Landlines Don’t Need Wifi
Some seniors have a virtual phone through the cable company, but those virtual lines require Wifi access to work. So if the cable goes out or the electricity goes down so the cable router doesn’t work then your senior parent wouldn’t be able to use the phone. With a landline seniors will never be without a phone to call for help.
