Love is in the air! February 14th is Valentine’s Day and couples of all ages will be out celebrating their love for each other. It’s a beautiful day filled with roses and chocolates and dancing! Most people associate this day with youthful, young couples but the fact is love has no age limit.
Valentine’s day can be especially hard on the elderly who may have lost their loved ones and are alone. Fortunately, love is not confined to just a romantic partner, but can expand boundlessly to family and neighbors. Wellness, a happy and loving state of mind is a great and achievable goal to set this valentine’s day.
Here are a few engaging activities to do this Valentine’s Day that can stimulate the body and mind, and remove any negative feelings of sadness in this month of love.
Valentine’s Day Card Decoration and Exchange: The benefits of arts and crafts are innumerable. This activity can eliminate boredom, bring about relaxation and fun and increase self-esteem. In addition, exchanging cards is a nice way to tell the people in your life how much you love and appreciate them!
Watch a Romantic Movie: Movies are an excellent pastime and also a great way to get that nostalgic feeling. Studies have shown that nostalgia fosters a sense of being loved and protected and offers a soothing sense of being at home.
Attend a Senior Dance or Event: Many nursing and assisted living facilities host programs in celebration of major holidays such as this one.
Write a Poem: February is also national haiku month. A fun and mentally stimulating activity could be writing a love haiku. It is a great way to tap into one’s creativity and unspoken emotion.
