Each February, Adult Alternative Home Care celebrates American Heart Month by encouraging our seniors to listen to their hearts! For us, this month gives us the chance to highlight the incredible benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially as you are aging. Adults aged 65 and older are more susceptible to coronary heart disease and heart failure, as opposed to their younger counterparts. In seniors 75 and older, congestive heart failure occurs 10 times more often!
Today we would like to urge you to listen to your heart and take it seriously. A healthy heart is the key to happiness in life!
Exercise! Exercise does not have to always be strenuous. Fun activities such as taking walks in the park, cycling or swimming are considered an amazing form of cardiovascular fitness.
Eat a balanced diet! A diet rich in whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein can sound off-putting, but with a plethora of resources available to us in the form of cookbooks and the internet, discovering new healthier recipes can be exciting.
Quit smoking! There is support available to those who want to quit smoking. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.
Monitor Blood Pressure! Keep track of your healthy blood pressure range through the use of at home devices.
Get a good night’s sleep! Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep every night. This helps support a healthy heart.
The annual month-long observance is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and supporting those affected by it.
If you or your loved one suffer from cardiovascular disease, you may find it helpful to have a home health aide to assist in daily activities. Our aides can help reduce the stress that comes from dealing with illness by offering personal care assistance, medication reminders, companionship and so much more. We are always happy to help!
