Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife, Coretta Scott King said, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.”
The third Monday in January commemorates the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day). It is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a National Day of Service – they call it a “day on, not a day off.”
This MLK Day, make it a point to serve your community. Service empowers communities and bridges the gaps by creating solutions to the major issues plaguing our neighborhoods. There are a plethora of projects available to everyone.
1. You can volunteer at a local food bank or donate to a food pantry.
2. You may want to take part in a local clean-up day.
3. You can sign petitions for a cause you care about.
4. Volunteer at an animal shelter, women’s shelter or homeless shelter.
5. You can teach people how to register to vote!
These are fun and interesting ideas that make a difference in the lives of people (and animals) and our environment.
At Adult Alternative Home Care, we always jump at an opportunity to serve not only our senior community, but the entire community. One of our favorite activities is playing BINGO at our local Adult Daycare. This alleviates boredom and helps keep our local seniors active, both physically and mentally. Not to mention, it’s super fun!
In all, remember the true essence of community service. It is intended for the benefit and betterment of the community. Evaluate what your individual communities really need, and please prioritize health and safety at all times.
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
