Spring’s here!! It’s the perfect time to get outside. Getting outdoors is a great way to relax and soak in peace from the natural beauty that surrounds us. Best of all, there are real benefits to enjoying the outdoors, especially for seniors. Outdoor spaces have the potential to improve health and well-being of seniors. Seniors who spend time in blue and green outdoor areas, such as parks or near ponds, enjoy it.

For seniors, the sensitivities to cold temperatures usually make the winter a dreary, unpleasant season, spent mostly indoors. But now that the vernal equinox has passed and the days are growing brighter and warmer, the time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather is upon us. There are several great spring activities that can help seniors reconnect with themselves, nature, and their families.

1-Visit a farmer’s market: The smells and tastes of spring are nowhere more evident than in the offerings at the stalls of a farmer’s market. Fresh, local, in-season fruits, vegetables, honey, preserves, juices, and more, all produced with care and artistry, await to delight and tantalize your senses.

2- Painting: The vibrant colors of spring, coupled with the more agreeable weather, is the perfect recipe for landscape artistry outside. Channel your inner Bob Ross and compose a beautiful sunrise over a field of wildflowers, or any other scene that strikes your fancy.

3-Bird watching: With warmer weather, our fine feathered friends are returning from their winter sojourn and singing for all to hear. Grab a pair of binoculars and hit the trails. You can enjoy spotting birds on their own merits, or you can grab a field guide to birds of your area if you’re more serious about it.

During early spring, the axis of the Earth is increasing its tilt relative to the Sun, and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly, causing new plant growth to “spring forth,” giving the season its name. Any snow begins to melt, swelling streams with runoff and any frosts become less severe. In climates that have no snow, and rare frosts, air and ground temperatures increase more rapidly.

Many flowering plants bloom at this time of year, in a long succession, sometimes beginning when snow is still on the ground and continuing into early summer. In normally snowless areas, “spring” may begin as early as February (Northern Hemisphere) or August (Southern Hemisphere), heralded by the blooming of deciduous magnolias, cherries, and quince. Many temperate areas have a dry spring, and wet autumn (fall), which brings about flowering in this season, more consistent with the need for water, as well as warm areas may not experience “spring” at all until May.

While spring is a result of the warmth caused by the changing orientation of the Earth’s axis relative to the Sun, the weather in many parts of the world is affected by other, less predictable events. The rainfall in spring (or any season) follows trends more related to longer cycles or events created by ocean currents and ocean temperatures.
