Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. This month honors women’s contributions in American history. It’s no secret, the vital roles women have played in US history. From Margaret Brent– the first woman to demand the right to vote in 1647, to Elizabeth Blackwell– the first woman to earn a medical degree, we have seen and read of the important roles that women have played in the development and betterment of America.
This year’s theme celebrates “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion”.
Being that we love what we do here at Adult Alternative Home Care, this year we would like to honor some women who made groundbreaking strides in home care!
The Ladies Benevolent Society – Charleston, South Carolina.
Throughout history, family members had provided health care to their sick relatives in their own home. The earliest documented organized effort to care for the sick in their homes was in 1813. The Ladies Benevolent Society were responsible for this great service. They were a group of untrained women who entered homes of the poor and dependent to provide care and domestic comfort. They also hired trained nurses to help the sick poor and coined the term “visiting nurses”.
Lillian Wald
Lillian Wald was a trained nurse who established the Henry Street Settlement. The nurses who worked at the Henry Street Settlement visited the sick in their homes, and also provided social services for people throughout the city. The Henry Street Settlement was arguably the first home health agency and many of their procedures are still followed till this day!
This Women’s History Month, we urge you to reflect on the women around you and appreciate all of their contributions to your community!
