Happy National Nutrition Month!
The number one cause of death in American men and women of ethnic descent is heart disease. Every 34 seconds someone dies from cardiovascular disease. Eating a diet high in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol has been linked to heart disease. This issue highlights the importance of nutritional education.
In grade school, we all learned about the food pyramid and the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Today we know that there is way more to healthy eating than simply telling people what to eat; the emphasis should be on how much to eat as well. In 2011, the USDA flattened the pyramid into a plate. This concept reflects an accurate nutritional balance of a healthy diet and emphasizes the relevance of moderation and portions when it comes to our meals.
This plate is easily memorized and therefore very practical. Half of it consists of whole vegetables and fruits, and the other half is split between protein and grains. Grains should always be substituted with whole grains when possible.
